Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation
What is it?
Damage to the skin from trauma or inflammation may result in discolouration of the affected area. Compared with normal skin, these areas may appear slightly darker in colour (hyperpigmentation) or slightly lighter (hypopigmentation).
While this condition is seen in all skin types, it is more common and more persistent in people with skin of colour (pigmented/coloured skin).
Post-inflammatory pigmentation can be challenging to treat, with pigmentation occasionally persisting for months or years depending on the initial cause.
